For Prospective Students: The Music Theory Placement Process at Youngstown State University
1. Schedule an
audition at the Dana School of Music. If you audition on one of the
scheduled audition days (usually in February and March), you will take the
Music Theory Placement Exam that day. If you audition on a different day,
please contact Dr. Jena Root to schedule your exam when you are at YSU for your
audition.
2. Don’t panic. The test results will be used only for theory placement and will have no effect on your admission to the university, or potential scholarship awards. The Music Theory Placement Test is designed to help us determine what level you have reached in your practical musicianship skills. Your test score will be placed on file in the School of Music for advisement only.
3. You will receive your scores via e-mail after the last audition day has taken place. Scores are usually sent in mid-April. Depending on your score, you will be advised to register for either MUTC 1520 (Materials of Music, 3 credits) or MUTC 1531 and 1531L (Musicianship 1 + LAB, 4 credits).
4. Study music theory over the summer using our free online practice placement test and/or some of these other study tools.
5. If you wish, you may re-take the placement test in August if your original score was not high enough to place you in Musicianship 1. The test is usually administered the Monday before classes begin.
