Clough/Conley/Boge: Scales, Intervals, Keys, Triads, Rhythm, and Meter
Assumes students know note-reading in treble and bass clefs, and placement of notes on the keyboard.
Harder/Steinke: Basic Materials in Music Theory
Before you even ask: No, I don't know why it has a giant chicken on the cover.
Ottman/Mainous: Programmed Rudiments of Music
Pricey, but thorough.
Soskin: Rudiments of Music for Music Majors
Simple, straightforward, self-study book; time limits and answers are given for all assignments. NOTE: This book presents alto and tenor clefs very early; don’t worry about these for the placement test. At YSU, we cover them later in the theory sequence.
